Kvorning Design & Communication is the winner in an invited ideas competition for a permanent new exhibition about the global energy and climate challenge for the Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger.
Kvorning’s winning proposal will be developed and elaborated in close dialogue with the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, thereby guaranteeing both the museum and its partners wide-ranging influence over the concept, content and form of the exhibition.
“We’re pleased to once again be set to collaborate with Kvorning Design & Communication on the realization of a very exciting and important exhibition at the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Kvorning’s concept has been chosen because, in an incredibly effective way, it takes the exhibition space as its basis and shows how it can be used in its own right to convey the message of the exhibition. We’re looking forward to a close and fruitful collaboration and are confident that together we will arrive at a thought-provoking and interesting exhibition about the greatest challenge of our age: the energy and climate problem, with the architecture in the space, the exhibition design and the content together telling the story,” explains Head of Exhibition and Communication at the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, Anja W. Fremo.
Message conveyed by the space
The shape of the exhibition space forms a natural, opinion-generating component of the facilitation process. A circular exhibition with a central luminous element – an artistically stylized sun, globe or something completely different—that remains to be seen from the dialogue that emerges—immediately grabs the attention of visitors young and old, highlighting the importance of adopting a reflective approach to the energy and climate issue.
Now’s the time!
A mixture of analog and digital media gives people of all ages the low-down on fossil energy and renewable energy. Sustainability is a ’must’, but can it meet our needs, we wonder?
Dilemmas
Interactive stations are being considered as an introduction to various forms of energy in a number of Norwegian cities, e.g. an interactive station about electricity, which is generated cheaply by Norway’s many hydroelectric power stations. There are many challenges associated with switching to green energy, but at the same time also many dilemmas.
The exhibition (120 sq.m) opens in April 2019 and was won in an invited international competition.

Kvorning Design & Communication has masterminded the World Heritage Rock Art Centre – Alta Museum’s new 150 sq.m permanent exhibition, Traces in Stone, about Alta’s world heritage, rock art, which has opened in Alta in Finnmark county, Norway.
A modern, interactive exhibition about the rock art of Alta, which includes UNESCO-protected rock carvings and rock paintings made approximately 7,000 to 2,000 years ago. Alta has Northern Europe’s largest occurrence of rock art from the hunter-gatherer society. It constitutes the most important evidence of settlements and human activity so far north during prehistoric times. And as a result it was added to UNESCO’s world heritage list as early as 1985.
The exhibition offers plenty of interaction and entertainment for everyone. Here, for example, visitors young and old can sculpt out a rock carving, go exploring in the history of Alta in the ’Landscape Game’ and generate luminescent rock carvings in the dark by lamplight. Traces in Stone offers experiences and activities that will wow, inform, generate debate and provide food for thought. The exhibition also includes a selfie booth with Northern Lights, buttons and infographics that conjure up and animate the magic of the spirit world of the past.
Harriet Hagan, Manager of the World Heritage Rock Art Centre at Alta Museum, states:
“With Traces in Stone we invite the public to enjoy experiences, participation and exploration, while at the same time encouraging their curiosity and engagement. The exhibition provides an altogether different experience to previous exhibitions, and visitors will learn about rock art by using both their hands and their heads. The museum has been working on the exhibition for many years, and we are extremely proud that we can now show it off to both the local population and all our visitors.”
The exhibition was won as part of an international competition.

Kvorning Design & Communication is responsible for the concept, design and production of the Danfoss Museum’s new permanent exhibition, ‘Mads and his dreams’, about the founder, Mads Clausen (1905-1966). Set on his native farm in Als, the exhibition takes its cue from Mads’s ability to dream throughout his life. From pure imagination and fervent desire during his boyhood, through inspiration and creativity in his youth, to concrete goals for the future during adulthood.
‘Mads and his dreams’ brings to life the tale of a person who is capable of dreaming, setting himself goals and accomplishing them. A narrative device with conscious dramatic art, light, sound and projections. The rooms of the farm create filmic backdrops to the anecdotes. A poetic and unconstrained layer that underpins the narrative. Displays operate on sight-lines and axes, positioning central experiences and points de vues at the end of them, with one room thereby introducing the next. In parallel with Mads’s life story and Danfoss’s development, the rooms and the stories unfurl – ups and downs – joys and sorrows.
Kvorning Design & Communication and the Norwegian Vindfang have won the competition for an exhibition concept about Norway’s second-largest export business, the aquaculture industry, for the Coastal Museum under the museum complex at Sør-Trøndelag in Norway. The concept of ’The Pioneers’ takes as its inspiration the tales of the initiative-takers ’from the fish-farming heartland’. Who were they? What did they think? How did they advance by trial and error? What proved successful? And what did they learn?
At Hitra, on an island just off Trondheim, it’s all about salmon. Here, fish eggs are fertilized, matured and hatched in fresh water. Here young salmonids grow to full size in the floating fish-rearing cages of the sea. And here at the Coastal Museum’s Sandstad Department they are harvested. So this is the obvious location to convey the history of the Norwegian fish-farming industry, and to let 24 pioneers tell you about their contribution to the development of Norway’s second-largest export trade.
Kvorning and Vindfang’s concept conveys Norwegian fish-farming history from 1970 to the present day through three major narratives: The local history, with animation of Hitra and the area; the national history of the pioneers along the coast from Finnmark to Vestfold, through wall panels, photos, interactive screens, short texts, objects in display cases, light and sound; and the history of the salmon and the industry as a reworked 360-degree show with moving pictures and natural sounds in Aegir’s Hall: the octagonal cinema. Silhouettes of the 24 pioneers reflect the dynamics. Past and present.
The concept was won in a competition, with Kvorning Design & Communication and Vindfang from Hitra teaming up to secure international experience for the assignment combined with a local presence. Head of Department Magnar Ansnes from the Coastal Museum at Hitra justifies the winner concept thus:
“Kvorning and Vindfang’s exhibition concept is both self-mediating and well suited to larger groups with a guide. The overall look of the concept works well, just as the route around it is self-evident. The re-purposing of existing installations by the team, e.g. in Aegir’s Hall, frees up resources and gives us more room for manoeuvre. And finally, the team’s excellent control of the light is a feature to which the museum attributes great importance.”

Kvorning Design & Communication beats off international competition and wins the contract for the design of a world heritage exhibition about ‘Wildy, beautiful Vega’ commissioned by Vega Verdensarvsenter AS.
The concept of the exhibition is inspired by the rich cultural landscape of the Vega archipelago and forms an abstract retelling of the archipelago’s contrasting landscape with steep mountain sides and flat islands just above sea level. The interior will refer to the typography of the islands and the unique production of eider down, reflective acrylic plates will symbolise the Northern Lights and the selection of colours and materials will be inspired by the wooden houses and churches of Vega.
Vega is one of the world’s most fascinating archipelagos. More than 230 bird species, eiders in particular, thrive on the 6,500 islands, islets and rocks. Through 1,500 years the fishermen and farmers of Vega have lived sustainably in this inhospitable, maritime landscape close to the polar circle thanks to their unique either down harvesting. This is also why Vega’s cultural landscape was inscribed on UNESCO’s world heritage list in 2004.
Vega Verdensarvsenter will open to the public in the autumn of 2018 but the official opening will take place in 2019.

When LEGO House, the toy company’s brand-new experience centre in LEGO hometown Billund, opens on 28. September 2017 – Kvorning Design & Communication has a finger in the pie. In close collaboration with LEGO, Kvorning has designed and produced the ‘History Collection’ which showcases all the highlights since 1932.
In a continuous, close collaboration with the LEGO Group’s ever so committed and inspired employees within the historic branch, Kvorning Design and Communication has designed and developed the exhibitions for the History Collection in the base of the LEGO House; a new 12,000 square metre experience centre in LEGO’s home town Billund.
Explore childhood memories
As grown-ups and kids head down the stairs, or descend by the elevator, into the basement and the ‘History Collection’, they are welcomed by a 2 x 2 metre logotype. The visitors will explore their own childhood through the gems of the exhibition: LEGO products will convey the company’s long history though significant milestones, drawings and models. Here is everything a true Lego fan could possibly imagine. Of course, there are also animations of kids playing in classic scenarios, familiar to most visitors either from themselves or their kids.
LEGO® models and boxes through decades
Halfway through the collection visitors will see a light which lures them into a room resembling the interior of a giant LEGO brick. The room features an exhibition of original LEGO models and boxes through decades. Regardless of age, anyone can find a cherished LEGO box, either as a physical model or on the interactive table displaying more than 5,000 LEGO boxes. In two, big round showcases and along the walls are hundreds of original models and boxes on display to stir dear memories. ‘History Collection’ is a true treasury which will steal your heart and mind.

Hobro Shipyard, the oldest working shipyard for wooden vessels in Denmark, provides an authentic setting for the dissemination of the maritime cultural heritage of Denmark and the shipbuilding traditions of the area which date back to the age of Harald Bluetooth.
Kvorning Design & Communication has designed the exhibition and produced dissemination materials – indoors and outdoors – signage, lighting and more. The beautiful building sitting on the shoreline of Mariager Fjord was designed by E+N Arkitektur, Århus. The exhibition, consecrated on the Danish constitution day 2016, was produced in close collaboration with the enthusiastic volunteers of Hobro shipyard.
The Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger and Kvorning Design & Communication launch a new exhibition, Deep Secrets, about petroleum geology. The concept features a distinctive key idea accompanied by stunningly grand visual effects and offer facts and knowledge in a pioneering form.
The new exhibition at the Petroleum Museum, Deep Secrets, is pure Jules Vernes! Indeed! Focusing on exploration, activities and drama, lots of challenges for hearts and minds, areas with both analogue and digital attractions which stimulate collaboration, learning and play, the exhibition appeals to 12-year olds in particular – and thus involves entire families.
200 million years ago
’Deep Secrets’ explains why there is so much oil and gas embedded in the seabed off the Norwegian shores. The visitors will embark on a journey taking them 200 million years back in time to find out how algae that absorbed energy from the sunlight, sank to the bottom and were transformed into oil and gas by slow, geological processes, can give us energy today. We hope and believe that this undertaking will become the new attraction at the Norwegian Petroleum Museum. Our goal is to entice our visitors’ curiosity with new, exciting dissemination, grand design and a brand new, powerful architectonic element within the museum’, says Anja W. Fremo, Head of Exhibition and Communication at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum.
Oil stream
The design is inspired by oil and the sea. Two big, billowing walls stand as a moving stream that cuts through the exhibition space, the underwater and the underground. When you move in between the walls you will face a subsea universe with a 360⁰ 3D-narrative in moving images illustrating the oil formation process. The surfaces of the walls display facts as well as interactive elements.
Learn and play
’Deep Secrets’ have been developed through a close collaboration between The Norwegian Petroleum Museum and Kvorning Design & Communication. The joint efforts have resulted in a concept with both analogue and digital types of dissemination and interactive elements. They blend smoothly together and convert technically difficult questions and problems into simple and useful knowledge thus combining education and entertainment in a playful way.
The exhibition opens to the public on 31 May 2017 and was won in an invited competition.
The Prison Museum in Horsens, Museum of Horsens and Kvorning Design & Communication open the new permanent exhibition ’Lorentzen’s tunnel’ telling the tale of Carl August Lorentzen’s escape from a Danish state penitentiary just before Christmas 1949. The getaway was sign of exceptional willpower and an incredible tour de force which shouldn’t have been possible.
’Lorentzen’s tunnel’ tells the story of how Carl August Lorentzen escaped from the state penitentiary in Horsens just before Christmas in 1949. Sentenced to a strict long-term punishment and being in love trouble, he found the willpower to overcome the impossible barriers. On his own, almost every night for eleven months, Lorentzen dug an 18-metre-long tunnel towards light and freedom. He let a note saying: Where there’s a will, there’s a way!’ However, the taste of freedom only lasted for eight days.
A reconstruction of the tunnel
Trough interactive, analogue and digital means, the exhibition ’Lorentzen’s tunnel’ depicts elements of Carl August Lorentzen’s upbringing, placements, love life and prison sentences – and in particular, his breakout from the prison in 1949. Visitors can experience the prison department and the cell where Lorentzen served his sentence 68 years ago. Here, one can also get a closer look at the tunnel, which has been reconstructed from photos, drawings, archaeological excavations and interrogation protocols. A projection on the wall of the tunnel shows Lorentzen digging, giving an impression of the massive effort and will power it took to break the ground using only chisels and counterfeit keys.
Re-enactment of Lorentzen’s getaway
The new exhibition takes the storyline and the dramaturgic and scenographic effects successfully set up by the other sections of the exhibition a huge step further. The escape tunnel will make visitors feel that they are very close to Lorentzen during his attempted flight.
The exhibitions of the Prison museum have received tremendous international attention the last years and have won several awards; e.g. Museums+Heritage Award 2016 for best international exhibition and InAVation Award 2016 for best European AV-based storytelling. The exhibition has received funds from the Nordea-foundation.

Congratulations once again Horsens Prison Museum, this time awarded second prize in the competition Historiske Dages Fornyelsespris 2017.
Historiske Dages Fornyelsespris emphasizes and praises new, innovative, surprising and alternative ways to disseminate history and cultural heritage – ways which make them reach a broader audience.
The committee motivates the Prison Museum’s second prize with the following statement:
“The museum relates to a greater perspective, not only including the society, the offender and the sanctions but also the stories behind; for instance, how imprisonment of one parent affects families and children. Five additional sections at the museum’s exhibition, new website content and last, but not least, a Twitter-profile which focuses on the current debate on the rule of law and how we relate to those who have wronged society.”
Congratulations also to the winners Øhavsmuseet Faaborg and Anders Olling and Erik Havsteen landing the third prize. 19 contributions were nominated in total.
The new temporary exhibition ’The Compartment of Dreams’ at The Danish Railway Museum exploring the Danes’ train journeys abroad is designed by Kvorning Design & Communication. The exhibition features both journeys in luxurious blue Wagons-Lits carriages destined for iconic destinations and the haphazardly Interrail journeys in the worn-down, red carriages of DSB. The two different ways of travel were both offered by Danish travel agencies in the beginning of the 1970’ies.
Poetic exhibition
’The Compartment of Dreams’ is a poetic exhibition which aims to make the visitors dream themselves; to put the everyday hassle behind and indulge themselves for a short moment. Hence, the 400 m2 exhibition space is structured like a train journey; before, under and after – the preparations with the travel agency, travel packing checklists and foreign currencies, the compartments, meals and dreams and finally arriving at Gare du Nord and the city of cities: Paris.
The essence of the journey
To ensure top-class experiences, the artefacts of the exhibition have been carefully selected and have been limited to an absolute minimum. Aiming to capture the essence and the mood of the journeys and, at the same time, provide a calm and spacious setting that stimulates contemplation. Uniform backgrounds streamline the expression and secures a consistent context across the setting while interactive and analogue features complement each other across the exhibition.
’The Compartment of Dreams’ opens at The Danish Railway Museum in Odense, Denmark on 18. March 2017.
The Association of Danish Museums (ODM / March 2017) presents the article ‘The compartment of Dreams’ about the Danish Railway Museum’s special exhibition about the Danes’ railway journeys abroad, which Kvorning Design & Communication has co-created. The exhibition opens 18 March – Take a trip to Odense and buy your ticket for the Wagon-Lits or Interrail. Enjoy your holiday and happy reading.

When the bells ring out at midnight and 2017 sets off, Kvorning Design & Communication can formally celebrate 25 years in the exhibition business. Designing and producing exhibitions around the globe, Arne Kvorning’s journey took off in 1992. Later forming one of the biggest Danish and Nordic teams working on the international scene, his line-up has now made it into the league of the world’s 10 most influential exhibition design agencies.
The upcoming New Year’s Eve is a historic milestone for Kvorning Design & Communication and marks 25 years in the exhibition business. Since 1992 the Copenhagen based exhibition team has created magic rooms and moments for people in more than 50 countries around the globe. Blending architecture, narration and design, vivid and vibrant exhibitions are formed, and by means of dramaturgic effects and narrative techniques from film production the agency’s modern dissemination captivate audiences worldwide.
Delphi, Dover, Dubai …
The Kvorning team design exhibitions of any kind; simple or complex, big or small. Keeping the doors open, over the years the design jobs have become bigger and more advanced and the invitations to tender for the world’s biggest exhibition assignments arrive with increasing frequency. Right now the team is working on several major projects: At Shannxi History Museum in Xi’an, China, Kvorning is designing a touring exhibition around a series of inaccessible, underground tombs with unique frescos from the Tang dynasty through virtual reality, animations and movies. Kvorning is also designing for the visitor centre at Greece’s largest bauxite mine for The Vagonetto Fokis Mining Park in Delphi. A few years ago Kvorning conceptualized, designed and installed one of English Heritage’s most popular tourist attractions, Dover Secret Wartime Tunnels. Here Kvorning won the competition for the exhibition telling the tale of how approximately 400 000 allied soldiers were rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk during WW2. This operation was masterminded and organized in the tunnel system reaching far into the white cliffs of Dover. In Dubai and other emirates several interesting competitions are ongoing. In Norway, one of Kvorning’s key markets, the team is working on designs for Norwegian Petroleum Museum in Stavanger, Norsk Jektefartsmuseum at Bodø and no less than eight Norwegian world heritage sites listed by UNESCO. The agency is indeed also producing for their home market; recently the Prison Museum in Horsens, which Kvorning revitalized with storytelling, projections, interactive elements, light, sounds and smells, was awarded several international prizes. Last week Kvorning finished in a very honorary second place in fierce competition with nine international exhibition designers as Lead Exhibition Designer for the exhibitions at the world’s largest archaeological museum, Grand Egyptian Museum, in Cairo.
Kvorning Design & Communication enters collaboration with Museo Fisogni in Tradate, Italy, and will create concept for an international travelling exhibition featuring the museum’s unique collection of complete inventories from old filling stations; i.e. vintage fuel dispensers, enamel plates, iconic Italian poster art, merchandise and more. The Museum is featured in Guinness Book of Records for having the world’s most comprehensive collection of these amazing artefacts – now the artefacts, their history and the smell of gasoline will reach an international audience, too.
Kvorning Design & Communication lands a second place in the competition for the role as Lead Exhibition Designer for an enormous, international exhibition assignment – 93 000 m2 of exhibitions, equalling almost 19 football fields – for The Grand Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt after a secret run up during the last year.
The Grand Egyptian Museum is nothing less than the world’s biggest archaeological museum and once finalized it will also be the world’s largest museum in all genres. Kvorning lands an honorary second place and while the contract was won by Atelier Brückner, Germany. The world’s top 10 exhibition designers were invited to the competition. In the competition process ten became five, then three… Finally, two agencies were put to the test and after three interviews and negotiation rounds in Cairo during the last twelve months, the winner was elected.
“Usually we are not proud of second places, but this silver medal is an exception. We are extremely proud to receive it, even if first places are the only thing that counts in this game. So, our warmest congratulations to Atelier Brückner in Berlin – and thanks for the game”, says Arne Kvorning.
Henegan Peng Architects, Ireland has designed the museum which is being built north of the pyramids. The museum is planned to open in 2018.
Lennart Skjødt joins Kvorning Design & Communication as new project manager on November 1, 2016. Kvorning is going underground again! We are thrilled to share the good news from Delphi, Greece: “I am in the very pleasant position to announce that our cooperation was approved by the board. Once Denmark’s biggest hydropower plant, now a cultural heritage and family attraction, Harteværket Visitorcentre, Kolding, was opened by Danish minister of energy, utilities and climate Lars Chr. Lilleholt.
Kvorning Design & Communication has provided the exhibition concept, design manuals, signage and dissemination concept. Both concepts and materials have been developed in close collaboration with the staff and management at Harteværket, as well as NIRAS and Baumann Boe-Whitehorn Arkitekter.
Still producing electricity, Harteværket is indeed an authentic setting. In the magnificent old turbine hall and the fascinating basement with its huge, red pipes, both grownups and kids can observe how water is turned into electricity. The centre also features a water playground which lets the little ones play and explore the subject on their own terms.

Together with AART architects, SLA, Ramboll and Kvorning Design & Communication have won the competition to extend Filmby Aarhus and transform it into a creative hub, not only for filmmakers, but for the entire city of Aarhus. The competition was launched in March by Filmby Aarhus and Aarhus Municipality in order to promote a positive development of the film city and add new qualities and experiences to the area where Aarhus harbour meets the city centre.
“The task opens up new opportunities to strengthen the film city’s status as a creative catalyst in Aarhus. By turning the film city inside out and bringing it to eye level with the surrounding city, we aim to create an eventful public venue while promoting new forms of cooperation – all with a focus on creating an integrated creative hub as an active and attractive part of the city,” says Anders Tyrrestrup, a partner at AART architects.

The concept ‘The secrets of the sea’ landed Kvorning Design & Communication the contract for a new exhibition about petroleum geology at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum in invited competition. The project proposal will give the Stavanger museum a new iconic element – an exhibition with a stunningly grand visual effect – which lure both youngsters and adults far down beneath the seabed.
The Norwegian Petroleum Museum’s new exhibition features science, activities and drama – pure Jules Vernes – as the working title of the winning concept ’The secrets of the sea’ suggests. In all parts of the exhibition hearts, brains and muscles of both children and grown-ups will be put to test. Zones with analogue and digital activities encourage collaborations, learning and play. This approach will surely appeal to the primary target group of the exhibition – 12 year old boys and girls – and most likely the rest of the families too.
Pedagogic substance and innovative wow-effect
“We see that Kvorning Design & Communication has understood the task and delivered a very resilient, well-reasoned and appealing concept. They unite wow-effect with the possibility of gaining facts and knowledge in an innovative design.” … “Our decision is based on what we think will make it possible to open a new exhibition about petroleum geology, with pedagogical substance and innovative wow-effect that will be strong enough to boost The Norwegian Petroleum Museum not only in 2017, but in many, many years to come.”
Whirlpool or gigantic wave
The design of the exhibition is inspired by the sea; travelling in the sea and along the seabed. A shape of a whirlpool or a gigantic wave pursues the theme inspired by tornadoes, the eyes of hurricanes, whirlpools and the human eye. The role of mankind is central: Getting the idea to extract oil from the bottom of the sea, overcoming the technical restrictions that hinder oil finding – and not least – extracting it from the sediments deep, deep down under the seabed.
Working closely with the museum
The new exhibition at The Norwegian Petroleum Museum will be developed in close liaison with Kvorning. By working together the museum will get a perfect starting point for a resourceful, purposeful and dynamic exhibition which incorporates a concept where analogue and digital means of communication actively blend together and turn advanced technical questions and subjects into straightforward and relevant information as well as fun and playful knowledge.
About The Norwegian Petroleum Museum

Brorfelde Observatory re-lauches as a discovery centre focusing on astronomy, geology, technology and nature.

Faithful towards the Prison Museum’s mission to be a vivid, influencing museum and the vision of becoming the world’s best prison museum, the exhibition encourages visitors to consider and reflect upon – and even enter a dialogue with – the four themes of the exhibition.
Kvorning’s exhibition concept combines interactive and analogue means to render the reality under lock and key. Moving images, projections, lights, sounds and scents reproduce life in jail and digital as well as analogue discussion forums keep the exhibition up to date.

The exhibition tells Olga’s story – from an upbringing in lavish luxury to a life in exile, and the stories of other Russian immigrants and people, who have moved to Ballerup from other countries or other parts of Denmark. The stories are communicated through paintings, artifacts, personal belongings and have been visualized through various types of narrative styles and techniques such as light- and sound effects.

The dissemination of the history of the town and the castle will take place in a visitors’ centre, which can be built – perhaps this is the most optimal location– in the existing facilities, the committee concluded.
