WHALING MUSEUM

KUNDE: WHALING MUSEUM
PROJEKT: PERMANENT EXHIBITION
STED: SANDEFJORD, NORWAY
Kvorning creates a new permanent exhibition at the recently upgraded and re-opened Whaling Museum in Sandefjord in Southern Norway. The turnkey exhibition was made in close cooperation with the museum. ‘We Were Out to Get Whales’ shares the story about Norway’s first oil adventure – whale oil.
The history of whaling is long and comprehensive. The exhibition focuses on untold themes lending the participants a voice. The title is a quotation from Norwegian shipowner Lars Christensen’s book ‘Such is the Antarctic’ from 1935, about the background for his long involvement in catching and research in the Antarctic.
Kvorning shares the hazardous story of whaling through a mix of media including lighting and projections using the museum’s amazing collection of film and visual materials as well as models of whaling ships and other vessels. The spectacular exhibit design reminds visitors of drifting Antarctic icebergs and is a symbol of the dangerous sailing connected to whale hunting. Photo: Dag Ingemar Børresen
